Description
German 1800's Selters Seltzer Decanter Stoneware Clay Nassau Jug Bottle Tankard. There is a mark, circled 21, on the tall bottle, which may indicate that it was made in 1821 from my research.
Excellent antique. There is some minor chipping bottom of the large one. See all pictures.
These bottles were purchased in Germany when I was in the military service there many years ago. One has a small price tag on it that indicates 20 DM. (Deutsch Mark)
Selters is a German brand of natural mineral water sourced from wells in the area of Selters in Hesse, at the Taunus mountains. The water has been known since the Bronze Age and famous as a natural soda water because of its high concentration of sodium bicarbonate, "soda".
The bottles are made from earthenware and covered in a salt glaze.
