Description
This antique Selzer Wasser (Seltzer Mineral Water) Salt Glazed Earthenware Bottle was made in Germany. The term Selzer derives from the German town Selters, which was famous for its mineral springs. This bottle is marked SELZER WASSER around a circle with a center logo consisting of a crown over a backwards F, frontwards L and a small v under the F and L. Beneath that mark, it reads LEONHARDI QUELLE, BRUNNEN-VERWALTUNG, GROSS-KARBEN . HESSEN. These impressed marks generally indicate the bottling company, the jug bakers mark, the well from which they were filled and the town from which they were shipped.
There is also an impressed mark No. 3 under the small finger handle.
This bottle was made circa 1800s and measures 11 3/8" high. The base is 3 1/4" across.
It has some imperfections on the surface, which are common in these bottles. There is a broken cork in the opening but the top lip is smooth with no chips. There are a few chips on the base, most of which are original to the bottle, as they are glazed over. It is a great piece!
