Description

Antique 1868
Salt-glazed
Ober Selters-Nassau Bottle for Mineral Water. Made in Mogendrof Germany. It has some chips as shown in the photos. There are no cracks and the handle is firm and in great shape. I can see the cork inside, however, I don't know how to get it out without damaging the bottle.  Starting in the mid 18th century, naturally carbonated spring water from the springs in Nassau Germany was packaged in these stoneware vessels and sold internationally. Shipments went to the Netherlands, Sweden, England, France, Russia , Africa, and even as far afield as America and Jakarta. It was a profitable venture with more than a million jugs sold in 1791. The stoneware bottles were designed with a short neck and were filled all the way to the top before being corked and cemented. The aim was to keep air out in order to preserve the fizz and flavor of the carbonated water. It has the round logo pressed into the clay. Also an M No. 68. The M stands for Morgendrof Germany where it was hand made and the No. 68 means that it was made in 1868. It is 11.75" tall and 3.5" across.  I saw a nice lamp made out of one of these jugs. Just a very interesting item! Condition is Used. Shipped with USPS Priority Mail.
