Antique 1800's German Seltzer Bottle Roisdorfer Mineral QuelleExcellent condition for the age of this bottle. A nice piece to look at and share the history. I have German blood on both sides of my family and personally have a love affair with "LaCroix". I had researched some information below for the bottle up for sale.
The Germans are the most discerning seltzer connoisseurs. German Seltzer water dates back to the time of Caesar & Augustus who conquered the area now known as Germany in the early 1st century. The Romans with their intense spa and bathing culture were very excited by the many natural springs they discovered in "Germania". Thus beginning a natural love affair with the seltzer water that never left the German "psyche". Some even claim this is why they love beer.
Several springs I learned are naturally carbonated in Germany. One in the town of Neider Selters eventually gave name to the mineral waters "Seltzers".
To conclude, another interesting item I read was that Carbonation sends our brain into the fight or flight kind of mode. Comparing the drinking of carbonation with an excitement of danger the same as eating spicy hot foods. They send a distress signal to our brain similar to our brain warning us of imminent danger when in actuality there is no danger. We become addicted to the sensation of danger. (Roller coasters is another example)
